This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. Once more, a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. Isaiah 37:30,31

This verse serves as a sign given to Hezekiah, the King of Judah, during a time of great trouble. It assures that no matter what challenges arise, the God of Israel will provide for His people. God employs a three-generational process to establish firm roots and yield abundant fruit. Let us examine the journey of three generations.

FIRST GENERATION

The first generation is a generation that grows by itself. When David was anointed, God was preparing a lamp that would shine before Him at all times. David faced numerous trials, but he overcame them and radiated brightly. He faithfully carried out God’s desires and received abundant blessings as a result. The first generation holds immense importance among the three generations because God establishes His promises with them. They determine the direction and depth of the promise they receive. Unfortunately, Jeroboam failed to be the first-generation leader God desired him to be. God had promised him a dynasty as enduring as the one He had built for David. The first generation has the freedom to follow their hearts, yet those who align with God’s heart emerge victorious. Without a successful first generation, there can be no second or third generation.

SECOND GENERATION

The second generation springs forth from the first generation. Solomon, for example, received blessings due to God’s love for David. As stated in 1 Kings 11:34, “But I will not take the whole Kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who observed my commands and statutes.” God blessed Solomon for the sake of David. The second generation serves as a source of comfort. While the first generation toils and strives, the second generation inherits the goodness and blessings. They make up for the tribulations and hardships endured by the first generation.

THIRD GENERATION

The third generation stands as its own generation. They must sow and reap, reaping blessings if they do good and facing consequences for foolish actions. Rehoboam, the son of the wisest man on Earth, made an initial decision that seemed unwise. He displayed indecisiveness and confusion. The third generation must sow their own seeds and work diligently to receive the blessings destined for them. They must fight their way to fulfill the expectations set by their forefathers.

The three generations firmly take root below and bear fruit above. Their existence is of paramount importance, paving the way for everything that follows. Which generation do you belong to? Are you part of the first generation, which faces trials and grows independently? Or perhaps you are part of the second generation, inheriting blessings from the first? Alternatively, you might be part of the third generation, tasked with fighting for your inheritance. These three generations belong in the Quiver of God.
